Filming in Papua New Guinea

September 26, 2010

It's on again, the latest of regular treks to Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea. It's no mean feat packing, labeling and shipping the many road-cases filled with diving and filming equipment. On this trip that's 32 items consigned weighing literally close to a tonne!

The reefs here, in the heart of the 'Coral Triangle', are the most abundant, diverse and intact coral reef systems remaining on the planet, not far to the north of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It's challenging and rewarding to work here.

We have been extensively filming tropical marine life here as a major project since 2006. Many of the scenes in 'Coral Sea Dreaming - Awaken' and 'Undersea Edens' were captured in this region.

The deep, remote, clear and protected waters of Milne Bay feature numerous islands and reefs only accessible by boat. Operating out of the port of Alotau, our fabulous floating frontline base for current filming expeditions is MV Chertan.

Marine Video Art

As a visual artist, David is always experimenting with different ways of taking us to places most of us don't have direct access to.

The development of ever larger display screens expands possibilities for stylish programming beyond traditional media formats. 'Virtual Decor' explores and re-interprets Nature with 'immersive' studies or in more abstract ways, but always highlighting dazzling diversity, colour and movement.

Coral Reefs and their inhabitants are especially appealing subjects for 'Digital Canvas' that can be framed and hung just about anywhere in public spaces or at home.

The 'Surreal Seas' and 'Virtual Ocean' Collections included as extras on Coral Sea Dreaming - Awaken are examples of Davids efforts to define a new genre for his work.
